The Wailers

Need a Bob Marley fix? There is nothing like The Wailers to bring you little bit of peace, love, and equality! This reggae group, anchored by legend Aston “Family Man” Barrett on bass, brings Bob Marley’s music straight back to life. Joining Barrett is his son, Wade Barrett, along with Koolant Brown on lead vocals, Keith Sterling on keys, Drummie Zeb on drums, Audley Chisholm on rhythm guitar and Cegee Victory bringing some female energy on background vocals.
I caught The Wailers last week at the Vilar PAC and I was loving the energy! The group played so many Bob Marley hits! Some of my favorites were Is This Love?No Woman No CryCould You Be LovedThree Little BirdsBuffalo SoldierGet Up Stand UpStir It UpOne Love, and I Shot The Sheriff. The Wailers closed out the first set with Waiting in Vain and finally We Be Jammin’.
I have never seen the Vilar crowd so rambunctious waiting for the second set to come around! Koolant Brown and Audley Chisholm came back on stage and set a calm mood with Time Will Tell and Redemption. Afterwards, the rest of the group came back on stage to finish the night out with Easy SkankingConcret Jungle, and Trenchtown Rock, closing with Exodus and a killer electric guitar solo!

Winter Wonder Grass 2014 - Day 3 REWIND

Sunday Funday at Winter Wonder Grass was one not to be missed! From brewer talks to local bands such as Head for the Hills and Fruition, the festival was once again packed with Coloradans.

Fresh back from a month long tour of Scotland, Ireland, England, and International Waters, Elephant Revival has returned to their homeland of Colorado to begin a tour across the United States. This five piece transcendental folk band, originally from Nederland, Colorado, consists of Bonnie Paine (washboard, djembe, musicla saw), Sage Cook (electric banjo, guitar, mandolin, viola), Dango Rose (double-base, mandolin, banjo), Daniel Rodriguez (guitar, electric banjo), and Bridget Law (fiddle). And everyone helps out on vocals. How fantastic is that?!

To close out the festival, The Infamous Stringdusters took the stage as a part of their 6th annual Ski Tour, all about shredding strings & slopes! And boy did they shred!

This five piece bluegrass band comes complete with Andy Hall on dobro, Andy Falco on guitar, Chris Pandolfi on banjo, Jeremy Garrett on fiddle, and Travis Book on upright bass.

Winter Wonder Grass 2014 - Day 2 REWIND

Day 2 was the perfect setting for a winter festival! Not too cold, with a light dusting of snow, what more could you want?!

Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers brought a refreshing sound to the stage, with some California folk-rock and the soulfoul voice of their frontwoman, Nicki Bluhm. If you haven’t had a chance to hear this gem, check her out, you won’t be disappointed!image

Highlights included a cover of Jefferson Airplane's Somebody To Love, music from the same hometown as Nicki Bluhm, San Francisco, California. Nicki’s originial Little Too Late was also a fan favorite along with Jetplane:

If you want my love tomorrow

You better give it up today

Cause I ain’t makin any plans anymore

And I don’t know how long I’ll stay.

image

Frontwoman Nicki Bluhm caught my ear with her rock steady voice!

image

Afterwards I headed to the Jamboree stage and was surprised by the incredible jams of the Wondergrass Special! This superjam included members of Milkdrive as well as guest appearances from the washboard playing Bonnie Paine of Elephant Revival. I’ve never heard a washboard sound like a tap dancer, until now!

image

Firethrowers lit my way to the mainstage to close out the night. I’ve always loved a good fire show, and these guys were almost like ninjas with fire!

image

image

Greensky Bluegrass was joined by Sam Bush to finish out the night at the main stage. From pickin’ string to Howling at the Moon, these guys sure knew how to get the crowd rowdy and groovin’.

Winter Wonder Grass 2014 - Day 1 REWIND

Avon, Colorado lit up this weekend with friends from far and near as Winter Wonder Grass hit Nottingham Park. I never could have guessed this Beaver Creek ski town could actually become a festival haven, complete with bluegrass fans from all over!

Greensky Bluegrass started pickin’ strings on the Wondergrass Stage Friday night, as the sun set and FestiPeople came off the mountain to get their legs movin’ and groovin’. Founded in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Greensky Bluegrass features Dave BruzzaPaul HoffmanMichael BontAnders Beck, and Mike DevolHighlights included their closing with Sam Bush and Drew Emmitt from Leftover Salmon.

Between headliners, smaller bands took the stage in Beer Hall tents, named Jamboree Stage and Pickin’ Perch Stage. I checked out an incredible North Lake Tahoe, California band called Dead Winter Carpenters.

image

image

Leftover Salmon took the mainstage next, and from slow beats to uptempo jammed out drum solos, my feet never stopped moving! And holy cow do I love that violin! Formed in Boulder, Colorado, Leftover Salmon brings bluegrass and jam together while featuring incredible artists including Vince Herman, Drew Emmitt, Greg Garrison, Jose Martinez, and Andy Thorn. Playing some of my favorites including Macaroni Cheese, Leftover Salmon brought some of their classic Telluride jams to Winter Wonder Grass!
